The West Linn Tidings welcomes three categories of opinion in our pages from our readers: Letters to the editor, political letters to the editor and citizen's views. Deadline for all three categories is 3 p.m. every Monday although residents are encouraged to send pieces in earlier. Weeks with a federal holiday in them typically move the deadline up 24 hours. We prefer receiving opinions pieces via e-mail. All items should be sent to email@lwestlinntidings.com. If possible, submit your opinion piece as an attachment in Microsoft Word or directly embed it into the body of an e-mail. If you are using regular mail, send it to West Linn Tidings Opinion, P.O. Box 548, Lake Oswego, OR 97034; if you are dropping it off at our office, we are located at 400 Second St., in downtown Lake Oswego. Writers are limited to one opinion piece per calendar month. Word limits are: - Letters to the editor: 300 words - Political letters to the editor: - 200 words - Citizen's views: 550 words
All opinion pieces need to include the writer's name, local address and telephone number — the latter two for verification purposes only. In addition, we request that where applicable any relevant affiliation with groups or organizations that you are writing about is disclosed. Letters that contain potential libel, other legal problems or that are in poor taste (name calling) will not be printed. Publication of letters remains at the discretion of the editor, who must assess content, space and the amount of duplication with other letters. Letters brought to the Tidings by a third party will not be accepted. Items submitted as citizen's views that seem more suitable as letters will be returned to the writer for a re-write as a letter. Whole-scale rewrites of letters already submitted are not allowed. The letter will simply be returned to the author for publication at a later date.
Regarding letters about political candidates or issues: Political letters are limited to 200 words with preference given to citizens in the Tidings'coverage area. The tone of the letters must be civil; any overtly negative or accusatory comment introduced about a political candidate will not run the week prior to an election. Only candidates themselves will be allowed to write citizen's views and no citizen's views are allowed on ballot measures with the exception of measures that are West Linn specific.
