Spice up the holiday season by attending holiday fare in the West Linn community.

For the fifth year in a row, locals can stroll through Maddax Woods on a lighted, wheelchair-accessible path to the viewing platform on the Willamette River beginning Saturday. The seven-acre park, located off Highway 43 and along the river, is lovely year-round – rich with native plants and folks walking along the pathway.

Conifers with lights, nature gifts and wildlife treats will be available for purchase from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The official lighting of the woods will take place between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. that same day.

The lights may be viewed each night from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., through Dec. 31.

At 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, a ribbon cutting will designate the new bridge over Bolton Creek to better connect Maddax Woods and Burnside Park. Before, travelers had to walk across a sewer pipe.

“You can now walk from River Street to Failing Street by trail,” said Ken Worcester, West Linn parks and recreation director. “This is a nice looking bridge, and it’s going to be safe – fit for bikers and pedestrians.”

Dignitaries from the city and county, Bolton Neighborhood Association and Friends of Maddax Woods will be in attendance.

“We know with the new bridge we will have increased visitors and feel it is even more important to protect and share this pristine urban sanctuary,” said Susan Carley, a member of Friends of Maddax Woods.

Maddax Woods will also be decorated with lighted “Charlie Brown” trees available with lights for $12.

Each year the Friends of Maddax Woods conduct the lighting event as their main fund-raiser to generate money to assist the city of West Linn in keeping the park a passive, nature park.
