West Linn Paper has gained acceptance into the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership.
A voluntary EPA program, the Green Power Partnership recognizes a variety of organizations and companies, educational institutions and local, state and federal government groups that purchase kilowatt-hours from renewable power sources.
West Linn Paper has been purchasing renewable energy certificates from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to offset its conventional electricity use for the past seven years, enough to offset about 3 percent of the company’s annual electricity use for its corporate offices and manufacturing facilities.
Penny Machinski, environmental manager at West Linn Paper, said in a public announcement the company is “thrilled” to be part of the EPA program.
“We’ve made good progress with energy conservation projects recently, reducing our fuel demand by 13 percent since 2005, and the Green Power Partnership provides a new tool to help us demonstrate to our employees, customers and community that environmental sustainability is core to our business practices,” she said.
According to the company, other efforts supporting environmental sustainability at West Linn Paper include: working closely with all pulp suppliers to ensure responsible forest management; consistently exceeding regulatory requirements in water quality, quantity and temperature; taking a progressive approach to reduce energy use and improve air quality; improving waste-material recycling; and encouraging active participation among all employees.
