Participating in sports growing up — rugby, soccer, baseball and crew — got Neilson interested in fitness. But it was a three-month stint in Jamaica working on sculptures that solidified his routine when he learned how to ride horses.
Being chosen for the magazine, Neilson said, has motivated him to stay in shape.
“I’m intense at the gym. My routine is about an hour and a half long,” he said.
A graduate of Santa Clara University with a fine arts degree, Neilson said he also enjoys traveling and has been all over the world — his favorite place being Southeast Asia.
So, who is this bachelor’s ideal girl?
“Someone that is creative and has good ideas — someone I can really relax with and be myself,” he said. “And someone who supports me.”
By that he means, supports his creative endeavors. A big Greg Oden and Trailblazer’s fan, Neilson said he hopes to one day design a fabric sculpture in black, red and white for the basketball team’s practice facility in Tualatin.
But for now, Neilson is getting a kick out of checking his e-mails and interviewing at modeling agencies — which is part of the honor from the magazine.
“Girls should know that Neilson isn’t like other guys. Everything he does is genuine, and yes, he really is flawless,” Wittorp said.
What has this experience taught him?
“I’m getting more natural in front of the camera,” he said. “I’ve learned how to smile.”
And while Neilson — in all his shirtless glory — smiles from the pages of a popular national magazine this month and has appeared on NBC’s TODAY and Access Hollywood and CBS’s Entertainment Tonight TV shows, he remains a simple man looking for, quite simply, a genuine girl. With no cable, Neilson had to watch his own TV experiences at a friend’s house.
“I hate seeing what America puts together for people to watch. It just distracts me,” he said. “I like to stay positive and if that means fielding out things that aren’t (positive), that’s OK.”
