Three local athletes have been nominated to participate in the 2023 McDonald's All-American Games, the country's premier showcase event for high school basketball players.
"Today marks another defining moment in basketball history — 722 of the nation’s elite girls and boys high school basketball players have been nominated for the chance to shine on one of basketball’s elite stages: the McDonald’s All American Games," McDonald's wrote in a press release announcing the nominees.
Three of the 14 Oregon athletes to make the list hail from Clackamas County schools, including Clackamas High School's Rhyan Mogel, Lakeridge High School's Keelie O'Hollaren and West Linn High School's Jackson Shelstad.
Mogel is the starting point guard for a Clackamas team that currently sits atop the Class 6A girls coaches' poll. The University of Portland commit has provided a steady, veteran hand for a young Cavalier team that features a heavy contingent of sophomores in the main rotation.
O'Hollaren has helped lead Lakeridge stay in the Class 6A top 10 all season, leading the team in scoring while serving as the Pacers' veteran presence. The Air Force Academy commit was an all-state honorable mention a year ago, and she may make her way back to that list after a strong start.
Shelstad, meanwhile, was the only local on the boys' side to be nominated. The University of Oregon commit is one of the state's top scorers and has led the Lions to prominent tournament wins at the Capitol City Classic and Les Schwab Invitational. As a result, West Linn has made it into the national polls, and Shelstad could win a second-consecutive Gatorade Oregon Player of the Year award.
The full list of nominees can be found online at mcdaag.com. The final boys and girls teams will each consist of 24 players, and the selections will be announced Tuesday, Jan. 24, starting at 3 p.m. on ESPN.

"As a lifelong participant and fan of all things sport, I appreciate the work and time necessary to excel on the various fields of play. It’s that appreciation that drives me to both acknowledge, reward, and celebrate the commitment made by boys and girls athletes from the field to the court, mat to the pool, diamond to the track, and beyond."
